Laila, Layla, Leila, Lejla or Leyla (Arabic: ليلى; Hebrew: לילא) is an internationally-used feminine given name originating in the Semitic languages. The name is derived from the tri-consonantal root: L-Y-L (ليل)(a root shared with the Hebrew name: Lilith) and means "Night" and over time has come to mean "Born at Night," "Dark-haired Beauty" or "Dark Beauty."[1]
While initially a popular name in the Jewish World (originally in Israel) it has acquired a following in the English-speaking world, the Nordic countries and among Muslims. The Nordic Laila or Lajla (pronounced lie-lah) is derived from the Sami name Láilá, probably a variant of the Finnish Aila.[2]
